604 Just Eat: Chinese Cuisine @ Yuan's Shanghai Serendipity Cuisine

March 13th , 2016

Yuan's Shanghai Serendipity Cuisine @ Richmond

Food:  3/5   Service:  3/5   Atmosphere:  3.5/5   Price:  Avg. $30/person

Yuan’s Shanghai Serendipity Cuisine is an authentic Shanghaiese restaurant located on no.3 road.  It was our first time coming to Yuan's.  Inside the restaurant it is very authentic Chinese style with all the wooden furniture and decorations, fancy style.  Other than the signature dishes that you expect in a Shanghaiese cuisine restaurant, they also have a lot of Szechuan dishes on the menu, bold and spicy flavors with lots of garlic and chili peppers.  Their dishes were very rich in flavors, seasonings and sauces which toward to the characteristics of Northern Chinese cuisine.  l can handle mild spicy but I definitely cannot manage the spicy level of the dishes at Yuan's.  I got to drink a lot of tea because of few spicy dishes during the dinner.

Steamed Lotus Roof Stuffed with Sweet Rice @ $8.95
Sweet!  Not many restaurants are willing to make this dish due to the complicated procedure and cannot sell it high now.  I love it!  Thumbs up!
Wild Malad Salad @ $8.95
One of our favorites dish, “must order” item when we go for Shanghaiese food.  Simple and tasty!
Xiao Loong Bao Juicy Pork Dumpling @ $6.95
Disappointed at the XLB.  The skin was not thin enough and became very stiff and dry when the XLB getting cold. Meat quality was so so, not impressive.  I miss the XLB I had in Taipei so much!!!  My standard has been set high now.  Haha…
Spicy Sour Soup @ $12.95
Would be better to have more “sour” flavor to balance out the spicy.
Smoked Duck (half) @ $20.50
The duck was cooked perfectly; the meat was so tender and juicy with the nice charred aroma.  It was not greasy at all and the skin was crispy.
Chili and Pepper chicken Medium Spicy @ $14.95
I had a small piece only, it was too spicy for me.  Meat was tender and flavorful, very SPICY!
Clay Pot Organic Greens Medium Spicy @ $12.95
This dish was served in a clay pot dish, pretty fancy.  The veggie was very fresh and sweet, medium spicy and seasoning. A lil bit oily to me.
Wonton in Garlic Chili sauce Medium Spicy @ $7.95
You could find this dish very common in Shanghaiese and Taiwanese cuisine restaurants.  The sauce was not as spicy as I thought, the wontons were tasty to eat with the peanuts and fresh scallions in the chlii sauce.

We came in a group of 4 so we were able to order more dishes to try this time. The price range is on the high side but reasonable in this food quality, dish portions and services.  I am not a big lover of spicy dishes so I might not pick Yuan's when I crave for Shanghaiese dishes.  If you are a lover of Szechuan and spicy dishes, you should definitely come to try.
