604 Just Eat: Vietnamese Cuisine @ Hoi An Cafe

March 19th , 2016

Hoi An Cafe @ Kensington

Food:  4/5   Service:  4/5   Atmosphere:  3.5/5   Price:  Avg. $15/person

I have heard a lot of good reviews about Hoi An so we finally decided to come on a  Saturday night.  Hoi An Café is an authentic Vietnamese restaurant located on Victoria Street, across from Tengs grocery market.  It is a small causal cafe, very clean and tidy with great services.  The dishes did not disappointed us, amazingly good!

No. 3 Banh bot loc la chuoi @ $7.50
Steamed pork and shrimp tapioca dumplings wrapped in banana leaf served with fish sauce
You do not find this dish common in Pho joints.  The dumplings were wrapped in banana leaf under steaming so each small dumpling has a light and fresh aroma of the banana leaf.  The dumpling was made by tapioca so it was chewy but not too sticky.  It was very tasty with the dipping sauce. The Vietnamese dipping sauce brings all the elements together!  It was a light appy and I love it!  MUST EAT.

No.12 Pho dac biet (Large) @ $8.95
Special beef combination (rare beef, beef flank, tendon, tripe, beef balls) with thin rice noodle in soup
The broth is always the ‘soul” to a bowl of pho.  I really enjoy the broth at Hoi An.
The beef broth was very rich and flavorful.  The soup was sweet and deep flavor with the rich beefiness taste when it was not greasy at all.  Mild seasoning was just about right.  Beef portion was generous and the meat quality was good and fresh too.  Everything was just about right!
No.8 Cao Lau dac biet @ $9.50
Special Cao Lau, Cau Lau with half pork & shrimp and a side of fresh mixed green herb & banana blossom
Another dish that is not common in pho joints as well, dry noodles.  Fresh and great portions of ingredients.  The noodles was a big surprise, it was so tasty to eat with the pork & shrimp and also the herbs and the sauce.  The sauce was very delicious with a note of sweetness.  It was a light style instead of those thick kinds like hoisine sauce or thai style sauce.  The sesame cracker was light and crispy which added a crunchy texture to the noodles.
MUST EAT!
The dish of green herbs

It was a great meal at Hoi An, good portion and quality, very attentive service.  Nothing to complain at all.  We weren’t that hungry so we limited ourselves to try one appy and two entrees.   We will be back for sure in the near future to try more signature dishes there!
